Emanuel Mamatas is a physician who has been practicing internal and geriatric medicine in Pittsburgh for the past fifteen years. His philosophy is simple: give with all your heart to those whose lives you touch. Needless to say, that giving extends to the animals with whom we share our lives.
Dr. Mamatas has written a touching story about the loyal and comic relationship between a man and his dog. What is engaging about the story is that we don't see the dog through the man's eyes; we watch the man and his family through the eyes of the dog. This unique perspective is enlightening and humorous.
Bogey, the hero of this tale, seems so human at times that we tend to forget he's a Golden Retriever. We experience his puppy days and his early efforts to make sense of the world around him. We share his adventures of growing up, bonding, leaving the security of home, infidelity, peer pressure...as well as the universal emotions of jealousy, competition, fear and paranoia. Bogey will have you laughing one moment and weeping the next. And he'll teach you things about being human that could only be taught by a dog. (Or at least only by a very bright dog.)
Children will love this story too. And along the way they'll learn some things about friendship, tolerance, and loyalty they're not likely to forget.
