Jerry Czarnowski (“Ski II”) enlisted in the Marine Corps in August, 1965. Following Boot Camp, Basic and Advanced Infantry Training, he was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines (3/5) in January, 1966. He was transferred to India Company the next month , where Ski was among a handful of India Company Veterans who completed their entire tours with 3/5 from the time the Battalion formed up at Camp Pendleton until he returned Stateside in April, 1967.
The late Lieutenant General E. J. Bronars, the former Commanding Officer of 3/5, once described the Battalion as “the most decorated Battalion in the history of the Marine Corps’ involvement in Viet Nam”. Ski’s pride will linger forever, having served with the “Teufelhuden” or “Devil Dogs” of 3/5 and with Marines who were awarded this Nation’s
highest honors.
Though he wasn’t aware of the notoriety, Czarnowski became a Company legend to replacements filling India’s ranks. He was known to them as “The Lost Marine”. The story of that event (among many other of “Ski’s” misadventures and mishaps) is documented here. His highest accomplishments were avoiding Courts Martial.
Enjoy the stories, and, of course, “Semper Fi”.
