If you’re thinking of representing yourself in a contested divorce case, there’s something Toronto lawyer Robert Berman wants you to know. “Right now, if you try to represent yourself in Court without a lawyer, you’ll be treated like a second-class citizen,” he says. “The Family Law Court process is frustrating and not very user friendly.”
Berman has restricted his practice to Ontario Family Law since 1979, says that a desire to help people pursue their parental and financial disputes in Family Court fuels his work. “Access to justice shouldn’t only be for the wealthy,” Berman says. “And you shouldn’t have to spend your life savings resolving problems caused by relationship breakdowns.
