How Do I Love Thee?
By Eric Wright

Every day our lives are governed by laws, which are so much a part of our experience that we don’t give them a second thought. We turn on a light, push the brake pedal in our cars, and even enjoy the beauty of a sunset, blissfully ignorant that a myriad of unchanging principles are being engaged, like a quiet chain reaction, to make it all possible. Those laws, most of which we have yet to discover, enable life as we know it to exist and to continue.

There is a proverb that says, “It is the glory of God to hide a matter and the glory of man to search a matter out.” The universal and endless quest to uncover and utilize the laws that shape our reality is what defines human progress. But what is the motivation behind these laws? Is it the impersonal force of chance that is at work? Or did, as the Judeo-Christian world believes, a personal God design these principles, not just to sustain a creative order, but through nature to express the depth of His nature? What if those moral laws we have heard about all our lives, which seem to haunt us like a poor report card, were actually intended to bring us back to that Creator and, along the way, build a culture motivated by love?
