This book is a work of a retired orthodontist who signed up for a course in “Writing Your Life” in an Adult Education course in his hometown of Great Neck, New York. When he discovered his own forgotten journals while cleaning out a closet, Dr. Sacks decided to mine them for memories and anecdotes about World War II, and those stories ultimately became a book. As a Captain in the United States Army Dental Corps, he served in the European Theatre of Operations. Though never in actual combat he was lucky enough to escape injury and even death in more than a few situations, which he describes in graphic detail. Although much of the memoir is set during the war, it is about love as a it is combat. Dr. Sacks embraced his time in Europe with gusto, in spite of the often bad conditions, using his brief leaves to immerse himself in local customs and culture –– and affairs of the heart –– all of which he recalls vividly.
Dr. Sacks has written a charming memoir for all those who made it through the Depression and World War II; and especially for their children and grandchildren.
Saul M. Sacks was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, New York University College of Dentistry, and the Columbia University School of Public Health. He now lives with his wife Lynn in surburban Great Neck, New York. They have four children who all live in the Northeast.
