Coach William “Bill” Abraham fathered a football dynasty at newly constructed Hempfield Area High School in rural western Pennsylvania with 140 victories and the best W.P.I.A.L. winning record from 1961 – 1971. With three undefeated seasons, and four seasons with only one loss, Abraham’s overall record was 140-64-6. Abraham, a member of the Pennsylvania Football Coaches Hall of Fame, coached the Big “33” Classic an unprecedented four times.

Born July 5, 1927, Abraham graduated from Jeannette High School with impressive football accolades that led him to All-American status at the University of Pittsburgh. Turning down an offer to play professional football for the Green Bay Packers to pursue a career in education and coaching, Abraham became a football coaching icon in the talent-laden hills and valleys of western Pennsylvania.

Perhaps greater than the number of victories Abraham amassed during his coaching career is the tremendous impact he had on his players who rallied to dedicate the very turf they battled on as Coach William “Bill” Abraham Field in the fall of 2005.

Spartan Football is a nostalgic journey through sixteen seasons of high school football in the tough Foothills Conference from 1956 to 1971. Author, John L. Wolicki shares the memories of the men who played for a coach who deeply influenced scholastic football as well as the lives of his players.

Spartan Football is also the bittersweet story of a writer’s transition from that of a player to an endearing friend to the man he so deeply respected, and then finally the sadness that comes with letting go.
