THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS BOOK IS TO GIVE INSIGHT into what it was like to live during the late 1920s and the 1930s, during the depression era, on a rocky, forty-eight acre farm in Calhoun County, West Virginia. The second reason is to tell the true story of "The Whipping on Sand Ridge, West Virginia." We girls loved hearing our Mom tell this story over and over, because it involved several of our relatives.
Since our book is true, we shall use the real names of our immediate family, but the names of special people in our lives have been changed. Another reason we have decided to write this book is that we have talked on several occasions about the lifestyles and society of today, and how it has changed during the past fifty years.
While growing up, we were able to survive on natural foods provided abundantly by the daily grace of God. We realized, at the time we were talking about writing a book, that most people in today's fast-paced society could not survive on the limited resources we had in our childhood days.
Today, in the early 2000's many men, women and young people are being told that their jobs are terminated and they will be out of work permanently in a few weeks or months. While many people have been fortunate in getting employment once again, there are many who can't find work and have lost their farms and homes.
After reading our book, we feel that people will certainly understand why we believe many people in today's world cannot survive without help from welfare, food banks, relatives and good neighbors, or unless they are blessed with a good, fertile farm and the survival instincts we possessed.
