by Barbara Cloud

On her way to becoming an actress, Barbara Cloud found her calling as a journalist. During a long and impressive career with Pittsburgh’s major newspapers she gave us interviews with the famous and not-so-famous, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the fashion world, and deeply personal essays about everyday life. Each of the articles in this thoughtful compilation exemplifies the kind of candid and insightful writing that, for many of her readers, made Barbara Cloud a household name.

Born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the third daughter of the late Dr. Milton Harlan and Elizabeth Miller Cloud (their first daughter, Ethelyn, died shortly after birth—and her older sister, Betty Joyce, died in June 1998, at age seventy), Barbara Cloud graduated from Uniontown Senior High School and Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, where she majored in speech and drama.

A former president of the Women’s Press Club, she received many honors during her career as a journalist: Pennsylvania Newspapers Publishers Association Best Local Column, 1961; 1961-62 Golden Quills; Alumni Achievement Award from Westminster College, 1968; the FRANY (Fashion Reporters Award New York), 1970; Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Society of Interior Designers first recognition award for daily influence upon lives of readers in the tri-state area, 1971; listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities; Allegheny County Medical Society Association Award for Better Living in Pittsburgh, 1986; Hadassah’s Special Gratitude Award for incisive commentary, 1987; Men’s Fashion Association Aldo award for a single feature, and later, MFA’s Lifetime Achievement Golden Aldo, 1991.

She resides in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh with her rescued cocker spaniel, Nash. Her hobby is photography and her home is filled with photos of Pittsburgh, the beach, and of course, her first grandchild.
